Through my lens

So far so great

So far I've been in Sevilla for one week and two days. It feels like a really long time but it's been wonderful. My Senora, Guille is so sweet and really wants to make sure that my roommates, Paige and Marcie, and I are comfortable and having a good time. We think that Guille owns her own pharmacy but we aren't sure. In Spain, they say that they work to live, not live to work. In conversation, people don't really talk about what they do or where they work. I find this cultural difference very interesting. I don't think it's good or bad, it's just very different considering in the USA one of the first questions you ask when meeting someone is "So what do you do?" Or "So where do you work?" Our preoccupation with careers and internships and school as job training is very different from anything here in Spain. I had a conversation with Guille about it once. She believes that school is to make one intellectually well-rounded, not as training for a career. I guess I see it both ways.

Anyways, the only thing I'm not crazy about here is the food. Most everyone on the trip likes it, so I don't know what my deal is. I'm not a picky eater, but basically of my top ten foods that I loath, most of them have been served at one point or another. Lots of tuna and mayonnaise...ick, I absolutely love the coffee here and I've found some good markets and coffee shops to eat at so things are improving on the food front.

The other day we visited the great cathedral. It's the third largest cathedral in the world next to Notre Dame in Paris and Westminster in London. This Baroque style cathedral is gorgeous. You can't help your eye from wondering in this place. I also got to hang out with Chris Columbus for awhile since his grave site is inside the cathedral. (One of three supposed burial sites for Chris.) Visitors can also climb the 36 flights of stairs in one of the towers and look out over all of Seville. This has been one of my favorite parts of the entire trip so far. It's breath taking and I love heights. I took tons of good pictures...too many. I know my photo album on facebook is probably the most boring photo album anyone has ever seen, but I feel like I have to put them on there.

Today we went to Plaza de Espana and too Parque de Maria Luisa. The park was gorgeous. So many people taking a leisurely stroll and enjoying the sunny day. I want to go back to this park to read and draw. There are several scattered benches. It reminds me of in the movie Sabrina when she says "you find your favorite bench and you go there everyday with your coffee and your journal and you listen to the river." Love that movie. It's underrated because no many how many times I watch it I always want to watch it again.

Went shopping last night with Paige. Something more at my skill level. The stores were packed. They have rebajas (sales) all through january and february. You know me.....can't ever pass up a good sale! (Sorry Dad, I know you're cringing.) Sara, Mango, H&M....loves.

Classes are going well. I think my Spanish classes are going to be hard. I mean I'm sure I'll get through them. I wish I could just take the classes and not have to worry about grades though. The grading scale here is weird. I guess it's similar to TCU but I have to get a 95% for it to transfer back as an A to TCU....kill me. On a more positive note...I'm gonna destroy my art history class. I really don't know why I'm not majoring in art history....I love it so much and I'm a lot better at it than Fashion or Spanish. Go figure. Funny the way things work out.
